The Town FC suffers elimination after losing to Colorado Rapids 2 in Western Semifinals

The Town FC fought until the end of extra time, but couldn’t pull out a victory while playing down a man.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — No. 2-seeded The Town FC fell in a thrilling extra-time battle to No. 3 Colorado Rapids 2 in the Western Conference Semifinals, 4-2, ending TTFC’s season after 30 total games played.

The Town FC played down a man for roughly 70 minutes at PayPal Park as Jamar Ricketts was given a second yellow card in the 52nd minute. The score was 1-1 at the time of the foul.

Colorado’s Billo Diop scored the first goal of the match in the 24th minute, but Rapids 2 only held their initial lead for four minutes. In the 28th minute, Nonso Adimabua fired a shot that deflected off Colorado defender Vincent Rinaldi and into the back of the net. Marked as an own-goal, TTFC drew even with Rapids 2 after Adimabua’s key attack.

Alex Harris put Colorado back in front in the 60th minute, as Rapids 2 probed TTFC’s defense, while it was without an 11th player. But once again, Adimabua helped catalyze The Town FC’s offense to re-tie the match once again. In the 72nd minute, Nick Fernandez sent a feed to Adimabua near the six-yard box while taking a dive. Finding it in stride, Adimabua hit twine once again — but this time, he got credit with a goal.

In the playoffs, two 15-minute extra-time periods are played instead of a shootout. Colorado scored twice during extra time, with Anderson Rosa connecting on a penalty kick in the 92nd minute and Antony García sealing the deal in the 114th minute. TTFC sent all of its players to attack in a last-ditch effort to score, which allowed Rodriguez to go the distance and give Rapids 2 a 4-2 win.

Rapids 2 will advance to the Western Conference Finals to face MNUFC2. The winner will compete for the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro Cup.

HISTORIC YEAR FOR NONSO:

Adimabua’s 28th-minute score was his first-ever playoff goal. His 13 goals and 19 goal contributions during the regular season were a club record, cementing him in TTFC history forever. His 13 tallies were tied for sixth in all of MLS NEXT Pro, helping The Town FC finish as the fourth-highest-scoring team in the Western Conference.

FERNANDEZ’S FEEDS

Fernandez’s assist to Adimabua marked his second goal contribution of the postseason, leading all TTFC players. Fernandez scored in The Town FC’s playoff opener against North Texas SC.

FOR THE TOWN:

The 2025 season was The Town FC’s second season under its current brand. The club played five matches at the home of the first-team San Jose Earthquakes, PayPal Park, and 11 at The Park at Saint Mary’s Stadium in Moraga. TTFC finished with a 9-2-3 home record, the best in the West.
