Oakland, CA, 1/20/23 – The Town FC is proud to announce its entry into the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), beginning with the 2024 season of play.

The WPSL is the largest women’s soccer league in the world and currently represents the 2nd highest level of play available to women in the United States, sitting beneath the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).  With over 100 teams from coast to coast, the WPSL is a vital stepping stone for players looking to compete at the professional level.  This past January, over 30 WPSL players were selected in the NWSL pro draft, and over 40% of all current NWSL players are WPSL alumni.

“We are thrilled to be joining the WPSL and are excited to provide our players with the opportunity to compete at a high level” said Gina Woodward, Head of Women’s Soccer. “This is a huge step forward for our club and we are committed to bringing a championship caliber program from day one, to The Town.  What impressed us with the WPSL was their track record of helping to advance players to the pro game, and we see their level of play as a tremendous launchpad for us to propel local players to the highest levels of women’s soccer.”

While not officially competing in the 2023 regular season, The Town FC women’s team will begin its operations in the Summer of 2023 and will hold weekly open sessions in order to develop a top player pool for a number of upcoming exhibition games to be held later this year.  Interested players can sign up to be notified about upcoming tryouts via our Player Interest Form. The team will also be announcing several open tryout dates, as it builds up to its full launch in 2024,

“Joining the WPSL is the first step in our plan to develop a world class soccer platform for the women of our region,” said Eric Toda, of The Town Council. “Our project is built on the drive to innovate and to disrupt the traditional status quo of soccer in this country. The WPSL has some really exciting initiatives in motion and we’re humbled to now be a partner with them in furthering the levels of play for young girls and women throughout Oakland and the East Bay.”
