The Town FC’s back line blocked 10 shots and helped goalkeeper Francesco Montali earn his third clean sheet in a row.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Town FC didn’t miss a single shot in the shootout and extended its unbeaten streak to four matches on Sunday against Sporting KC II at Children’s Mercy Victory Field.
Edwyn Mendoza, Wilson Eisner, Cruz Medina, Jermaine Spivey and Missael Rodríguez all nailed their shots in the shootout, which ended in a 5-4 result, after regulation ended in a scoreless draw. TTFC goalkeeper Francesco Montali made four saves during the first 90 minutes and made a massive additional save during the shootout to help give The Town FC the edge.
Regulation saw TTFC get outshot 20-10 with SKCII constantly threatening in the attacking third. But The Town FC’s back line held firm, a trend the team has taken pride in since its inception.
Montali’s clean sheet was his third in his last three matches, emerging as a premier talent behind a strong defense. Across TTFC’s hot streak, the team has only conceded one goal in regulation. The shootout was The Town FC’s second of the season, but the first one it won. It was also the team’s first road game in which it captured more than one point.
The win gave TTFC two points in the standings and one point to Sporting KC II. The four-match unbeaten streak places the club at ninth in the Western Conference, steadily climbing the ranks after it dropped its first four games of the season.
The Town FC’s lineup was drastically different from the previous match, but the depth stepped up, as five substitutes entered the match to maintain the solid defensive effort.
The Town FC and Sporting KC II will meet again in Moraga on July 13. TTFC also defeated SKCII in their lone matchup in 2024.
Next, TTFC will continue its road trip to take on Colorado Rapids 2 next weekend. The match will be important for The Town FC, as Colorado sits at third in the West and is coming off a sound victory over Real Monarchs.
The Town FC’s bout with Rapids 2 will kick off at 5 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on May 25 as TTFC aims to keep up its winning ways on the road.
