The Town FC continued its home dominance on Tuesday and is climbing the Western Conference leaderboard with a dozen matches remaining.
MORAGA, Calif. — The Town FC and Minnesota United FC 2 were the only two teams in action on Tuesday, and TTFC continued to show the league why it’s a serious contender in the West.
The East Bay club took a 3-2 win, securing back-to-back regulation victories and four straight games with points, showcasing the team’s deep array of scoring options.
TTFC hadn’t previously faced MNUFC2 this season but got started early with two first-half goals to grab an early advantage. In the 27th minute, midfielder Cruz Medina showcased his cerebral passing ability, finding Missael Rodríguez in stride deep down the field, who broke free and found the back of the net. The scoring sequence extended Rodríguez’s goal streak to three games, with four in his last five matches and five total on the season. Medina’s assist was his second in as many matches.
Eleven minutes later, The Town FC doubled its tally with forward Chance Cowell joining the party. Cowell headed the ball into the goal off a corner kick for his second goal of the campaign, giving TTFC a commanding 2-0 lead with the first half winding down.
MNUFC2’s Luke Hille nailed a penalty kick during stoppage time of the first half to bring his team within one, forcing The Town FC to gear up for a close second half.
After over 20 minutes of silence to begin the second frame, TTFC found itself in a prime position to make some noise in the 66th minute. Awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the right side, forward Diogo Baptista was practically licking his chops at the idea of striking the net. The 20-year-old sent a missile of his left foot to the far side of the goal to not only extend The Town FC’s lead to 3-1, but also give it the breathing room it needed to earn a critical triumph.
MNUFC2 brought itself within one, for the second time, as Babacar Niang beat goalkeeper Francesco Montali three minutes later to make it 3-2. Minnesota had a few opportunities to equalize across the final 20 minutes, plus stoppage time, but TTFC held down the fort at The Park at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
Montali made three saves, helping The Town FC reach a nearly perfect 5-0-1 record at home so far — only two wins shy of the team’s 7-1-6 mark in 2024. At sixth in the Western Conference with a 7-4-4 overall record and 27 points, TTFC is only five points back of second place. The Town FC will also have the luxury of staying in California for its next four matches, including three at home.
With at least three goals scored in its past three matches, The Town FC will next welcome Real Monarchs to the Bay Area on Saturday at 8 p.m. The upcoming battle will take place at PayPal Park in San Jose, as the Utah-based club will aim to find the regulation win column for the first time in July.
The 18,000-seat venue will host two TTFC home matches this season, with Saturday and Aug. 27’s bouts set to take place at the home of the Earthquakes.
