Oakland, CA, (February 8, 2023) – The Town FC is proud to announce its commitment to the launch of a professional women’s team in conjunction with the recently announced Women’s Premier Soccer League Pro (WPSL PRO), which is tentatively set to debut in 2025.
The WPSL PRO league is a new professional league being launched by the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), the largest women’s soccer league in the world. In launching WPSL PRO, the league will be working to secure sanctioning from the US Soccer Federation to operate a fully professional division 3 women’s pro soccer league. The league will feature teams from across the country and will provide a high-level of competition for players to showcase their talents, while striving for progression to higher levels of pro play in leagues like the NWSL or with clubs in other countries.
From our inception, The Town FC has been committed to promoting and developing the women’s game and is excited to be a part of building this new league. Our women’s professional team will provide opportunities for local players to compete at a high level, while also helping to grow the game in our community through furthering expanded equitable access and inclusion to the sport.
“We are thrilled for the ability to now launch a professional women’s team in the WPSL PRO,” said Benno Nagel, Chair of The Town FC. “This is a league project that is poised to grow exponentially when you look at the overwhelming number of groups who have expressed interest in NWSL but are still a bit away from achieving that level; groups like The Town FC. We can also all respect the tussle that USL and NWSL will endure over the top level of women’s pro soccer and feel that there will be a number of NWSL hopeful groups who will opt for the WPSL PRO as a better aligned ecosystem to incubate in. With a number of NWSL and MLS clubs already fielding teams in the WPSL, we’re excited to see what WPSL PRO can achieve in the next 18 months and look forward to building The Town FC womens program as a part of this new effort.”
The Town FC Head of Women’s Soccer, Gina Woodward added, “This is a massive opportunity for our club and for the women’s game in our region to develop and compete at the highest level. This new league represents so much for the women’s soccer community and furthers the ability for young girls to dream and aspire to professional soccer, and to see that pathway with us at The Town FC.”
More information on both the WPSL PRO and The Town FC’s expansion process within the new league will be made available as our process continues to unfold.
