The Town FC drops hard-fought road test against MNUFC2

Because of the loss against MNUFC2, The Town FC will have to wait another week to officially clinch a playoff berth.

BLAINE, Minn. — The Town FC’s 10-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday against Minnesota United FC 2, a team TTFC defeated earlier this season at home.

The 1-0 loss marked The Town FC’s second straight match without a goal, and the team’s first loss since June 22. TTFC had no shortage of opportunities, including a 30th-minute header from Wilson Eisner that sailed wide right of the net, but couldn’t fully capitalize.

Going into the match, The Town FC had a chance to clinch the postseason with a regulation victory or a shootout loss with other league results going its way. Because of the regulation loss, TTFC will have to wait another week to try to clinch a spot.

Missael Rodríguez sent a near-perfect cross to the back post in the 37th minute, but The Town FC couldn’t score. Cruz Medina sent a blistering shot just over the crossbar in the 55th minute, and MNUFC2 captured momentum soon after.

MNUFC2’s Logan Dorsey split the defense in the 62nd minute to put his team in front. Four minutes later, Rodríguez’s point-blank shot was blocked, as The Town FC continued to stack chances. Alpha Kabia was booked with his second yellow card in the 86th minute, giving TTFC some time to attack with an extra man.

Eisner made a final push for The Town FC in the 94th minute, but TTFC couldn’t find the back of the net. The loss was only the club’s fifth of the year, placing it third in the West and only one point back of second place.

TTFC will return home next to face Portland Timbers2 on Sep. 6. The Town FC defeated the Oregon-based club 5-0 in their most recent meeting and Portland took a shootout victory in their first bout.

The match will begin at 5 p.m. at The Park at Saint Mary’s Stadium as TTFC looks to keep climbing the Western ladder.
