The Town FC drops shootout to Tacoma Defiance in back-and-forth, high-scoring affair

Wilson Eisner scored his second goal of the season for The Town FC against Tacoma Defiance.

TUKWILA, Wash. — For the second time this week, The Town FC appeared in a shootout, but unlike Sunday, the club couldn’t secure two points.

Tacoma Defiance made all five of its shots to come out ahead against TTFC for the second time this season. Tacoma took a 3-1 result in the season’s opening match, and both teams have been highly competitive in the Western Conference ever since.

Fans attending Thursday’s match at Starfire Sports Complex got their money’s worth, as the regulation period saw eight goals combined between both sides. While forward Julian Donnery gave The Town FC a one-goal edge in the 91st minute, Tacoma didn’t quit. Roughly five minutes later — during the final seconds of stoppage time — Defiance midfielder Peter Kingston received a prayer pass from Charlie Gaffney and broke through the back line to re-tie the match at four goals apiece.

TTFC was no stranger to late adversity, too, as defender Wilson Eisner had previously equalized the match in the 85th minute. The Town FC had trailed 3-2 for 27 minutes before Eisner found the back of the net off a back-post corner kick from midfielder Edwyn Mendoza.

The Town FC had trailed from the start, as Kingston scored in the sixth minute to give Tacoma the early advantage. But forward Missael Rodríguez scored TTFC’s first goal in the 27th minute to match it. After allowing another Defiance goal, The Town FC caught a big break after Defiance forward Osaze De Rosario committed an own-goal off a corner kick.

In the shootout, Donnery, Cruz Medina and Diogo Baptista hit their marks, but it wasn’t enough to match Tacoma’s perfect, five-for-five showing.

Rodríguez’s goal was his third of the season, placing him second on the team. Donnery and Eisner each tallied their second goals of the year.

Gaining one point in the shootout loss, The Town FC is now 5-4-4 with 21 points. At ninth in the West, TTFC is only five points behind third-place North Texas SC.

The Town FC will return to Moraga next and open a three-match homestand beginning with Sporting KC II on July 13 at 5 p.m. The teams previously played on May 18, with TTFC defeating SKCII in a shootout after a scoreless regulation.
