The Town FC falls to St. Louis CITY2 after allowing two late goals

The Town FC’s six-match unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of St. Louis CITY2, a team TTFC beat earlier in the season.

ST. LOUIS — Playing for the first time in three weeks, The Town FC headed to the Midwest to face St. Louis CITY2 to try to extend its six-match unbeaten streak. But unfortunately for TTFC, St. Louis got the best of The Town FC down the stretch and won 3-1, scoring two goals across the final seven minutes.

St. Louis’ three goals were the most allowed by TTFC since the first game of the season against Tacoma Defiance.

The Town FC needed to adjust early after allowing an 11th-minute goal from CITY2 forward Matteo Kidd. TTFC responded in kind 16 minutes later, as a quick attack up the field allowed forward Missael Rodríguez to find the equalizer. The 27th-minute goal featured an elusive move from forward Julian Donnery to find the streaking Rodríguez, who scored after taking just a step into the 18-yard box.

Rodríguez’s tally was his second goal in the last three games as the Chicago native has continued to successfully finish offensive sequences for TTFC.

While The Town FC had a variety of chances to take the lead as the game progressed, it couldn’t break through St. Louis’ back line again.

The game changed course when a yellow card was shown to TTFC defender Ricardo Ibarra, after he attempted a challenge inside his own box in the 82nd minute. A minute later, substitute forward Mykhi Joyner took the penalty kick and scored CITY2’s eventual game-winning score.

St. Louis scored once more in the 90th minute as striker Caden Glover uncontestedly broke through The Town FC’s defense that was attempting to trap the ball in the near corner. Glover’s goal capped CITY2’s 3-1 win at Energizer Park.

The loss moved eighth-place The Town FC to a 5-4-2 record, with 18 points. As TTFC’s 2-4-2 road mark isn’t nearly as strong as its perfect home record, the club will be fortunate to have four of the next five games be back in the Bay Area.

The result knotted TTFC and St. Louis even at one game apiece in the season series, as The Town FC routed CITY2, 4-0, on May 11. CITY2’s victory was its fifth straight.

Next, TTFC will welcome interstate rival Ventura County FC to The Park at Saint Mary’s Stadium next Sunday, June 29. The Town FC defeated VCFC earlier in the season and will be looking to get back into the win column. The match will begin at 5 p.m. in Moraga.
