The Town FC takes shootout against Real Monarchs, extends unbeaten streak to double-digits

The Town FC goalkeeper Francesco Montali has six clean sheets, good for second in MLS NEXT Pro.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Back at PayPal Park for the first time since July 26, The Town FC went toe-to-toe with Real Monarchs and took a 3-2 shootout victory after a scoreless regulation.

Both teams were previously even in the season series with one win apiece. TTFC’s shootout triumph clinched 10-straight unbeaten results dating back to June 29.

Entering the game at No. 2 in the Matchweek 24 Power Rankings, The Town FC was determined to extend its regulation win streak past seven games, but the shootout result still inches the club closer to clinching a playoff berth. The two points further solidify TTFC at second in the West, only behind St. Louis CITY2, the lone team to clinch a playoff spot in the conference.

At the home of the Earthquakes, despite zero regulation goals, The Town FC still put forward its best effort. Forward Nonso Adimabua nearly scored less than 20 seconds into the match after breaking free in the box.

While both teams had seven shots in regulation, five of TTFC’s were on target, while Real Monarchs only had two on frame.

In the shootout, The Town FC had three players find the back of the net. Julian Donnery and Edwyn Mendoza netted their tries as both teams went back-and-forth to begin the shootout. After both teams missed their respective third attempts, Ariel Mbumba found the back of the net on the right side.

The Town FC goalkeeper Francesco Montali did everything he could to earn the positive result, including making three consecutive clutch, diving saves to keep Real Monarchs out of the net. Montali’s clean sheet was his sixth of the season, placing him tied for second in the league ranks.

Still vying for the top spot in the West, The Town FC will aim to keep its undefeated streak alive with seven matches remaining in the regular season. Next, TTFC will travel almost 2,000 miles to Blaine, MN, to face MNUFC2. The Town FC took down MNUFC2 3-2 in the teams’ prior match this season.

The match will kick off on Sunday at 5 p.m. as TTFC will look for another result on short rest.
